Maybelline Magnum Super Film Mascara

I must say.. This advertisement has been making me look at that bright yellow tube every time I'm at a pharmacy.

The wand is pretty much like my favourite original Magnum. It's just the perfect size and all.

This is my curled lashes, before mascara. I didn't curl them too much here but believe me, it doesn't make much of a difference after mascara.

With Super Film mascara..

Volume : About the same volumizing effect as the original Magnum. Not too bad but easy to clump.

Length : Third pic may look like it lengthened a lot but my lashes just uncurled and appear longer. This does provide a little extra length.

Curl : Can't hold a curl well (refer to middle pic). Original Magnum maintains the curl from morning til night but this practically straightens my lashes upon application. As the result, you can't see my lashes in a full faced picture =_= Sometimes I curl it again after mascara but I feel that this damages my lashes as I have to pull them off my curler and comb through the clumps. Combing removes some of the mascara so I try not to.

Someone suggested using the heated eyelash curler after mascara so I tried it out with Super Film. Yes, it does work to re-curl my lashes but most of the time, it kinda 'melts' the mascara and clumps the lashes together. Not as damaging as a normal curler but harder to comb.

Even after that, you still can't really see my lashes here. I'm not feeling the 10x effect.. =(

Last but not least.. Removal! The original Magnum was considered hard to remove but I ignored that cos I liked it too much. This however...

Washes off with plain water!!

NO tugging

NO rubbing

NO lashes falling

NO cotton pad needed

I was amazed! Didn't think it could actually be true until I tried it myself. Simply soaked my lashes with water (warm works better than cold), pinched lightly on my lashes with 2 fingers and the mascara came off. The mascara looked like seaweed shreds. Kinda disgusting. I even tried scraping my lashes after that and there was no residue. So suitable for lazy nights... LOL

Despite washing off with water, it doesn't smudge much (almost not at all!). For the record, I have oily combination skin and it was a hot day. Edit : After using it a few more times, this is really smudge proof!

Because of it's easy removal, I think this mascara would be good to use with falsies or extensions. Using oil based makeup remover may damage falsies and extensions / the glue in them. Also, all that tugging could cause your falsies to be out of shape.

Okay, I think some of you may be concerned about the removal part. What if it rains? Or you fall into a swimming pool or just somehow get your lashes wet? Well, unless you're using some super waterproof mascara, whatever mascara you're using is gonna smudge and you're not gonna come out of that pool looking sexy (panda-like, perhaps?). So instead of smudging, wouldn't coming off clean be better? I definitely prefer the latter =)

Price : RM35.90 / RM 32.31 (Introductory price)
Bought from : Pharmacies

Pros : Removable with warm water (and all its benefits), adds volume, smudgeproof, good for falsies/extensions wearers
Cons : Doesn't hold curl, straightens lashes, clumps, little lengthening

My conclusion : Still on the fence with this. Sure, removal is darn easy but I would also like a mascara that can give visible results. If not, what's the point of wearing mascara? Not sure if I'll purchase for my own (this is my sister's lol).

  1. If I fall in the pool, I don't think I would have time to worry about mascara. But yeah, it's better to have it come off instead of smudging. I think I would get this mascara once my shopping ban ends, simply for those lazy day.

  5. wow!
    it can easily be removed?!
    that's good!

i guess to make it work you ought to use something to your lashes prior to application..like a primer to make sure that the curls stayed, huh?

  6. I don't see any volume action going on there..quite dissapointed..This doesn't look anything special apart from the easy-removal and the bright yellow with red letterings tube. Thanks for this review, Isabel ^^
I think the Long Extreme Double Stretch one (also from Maybelline) is much much better since it retains curl, gives length, err..not so much on the volume, but also can be removed with water! =D

  7. @ miss syukur
So disappointed cos I really liked that it came off with water. But very suitable for my sis as her lashes have a tendency to fall during removal. But she also complained about the curl (or absence of).

    @ Gaby
YES! They're all from the same mascara range I guess lol Magnum is the Asian version as it's more suitable for our thinner lashes.

    @ thiamere
Yup! If not for the eyeliner, I wouldn't even need eye makeup remover! ^_^ Blah.. The only primer I've tried is the same price as a mascara. And it doesn't come off with water! So I'll still need to use makeup remover. No point then lol

    @ aisyah
Yeah... It just clump my lashes together so it appears thicker. I've never heard of that mascara though. Is it available locally??????

  9. Thanks for your Post! Perfect~
I Love mascara, really Great effective eyelash curlers and all things Lashes.

I wanted to share that my NEW favorite is the Hot Lashes heated 2 pc lash curler! It has gotten great reviews at Amazon--Cult favorite Hot Lashes Makeup artist Kit..Absolute best out there~!

They have a great sturdy 24K gold metal curler similiar to the Shu Uemura and Sheisdo one that comes with its own seperate pink small heater base that heats just the pad in the curler, this way my curl lasts till the next day~

Makes my eyes POP and Keeps my lashes super curly, they have a website Hotlashes...HTH~

Major Rave, the cadillac of curlers..so worth the price. My friends and I love love love this one! Best by far,,
    HTH~…:) Abundant blessings..

  13. Hey, thanks a lot for replying to my mail. You were really nice. Yup, the one with purple words saying "the Magnum Volume Express, Waterproof".

If that smudges on oily face, what about this Super film one?

  15. Hey, thanks once again!

Looks like Superfilm is really a better choice for oily face. But i oso want the volume and curling effect.. Hard to please huh.. But afterall, that's the purpose for using mascara!

Still cant make up my mind. Can u help me out again? If i should take Waterproof or Superfilm?

And one more question, do you haf any eyeliner to recommend for oily face? Coz it's ugly when it smudges.
